While we specialize in the framing of P. Buckley Moss collectable images using conservation methods, we are also called upon from time to time to frame an object.

Take a look!

This is a Chinese Shadow Puppet that was framed at our gallery recently. This project took many hours of research prior to doing the actual work, but the result was better for the preparation time that was taken.

This Chinese Shadow Puppet is jointed at the top of each leg section, at the waist and neck and also at the shoulders, elbows and at each wrist.

I hand sewed this puppet to the matboard in a supportive maner. I used some special thread and tools that I purchased from the AttachEZ company that made the job more professional looking. Their thread doesn't tangle or wear and is very strong. The Attach EZ tool made the holes for the needle consistant and uniform.

Although I was not able to get a good photo of the depth in this piece, the frame moulding was deep enough that I was able to install triple spacers under the top mats so a shadow box effect was established. Of course, the spacers were lined with the same matboard so that when standing to the side and looking into the framed piece you do not see anything but a lined surface. Very attractive.

The entire body of this Chinese Shadow Puppet is made up of tiny  plastic shaped flowers with connection pieces of hard plastic holding the entire design together.

The puppet appears to be hand painted and decorated and there is open spaces between each design with connecting lines of plastic to tie the entire puppet together. Very unusual!

Flowered skirt section of Chinese Puppet. The front decoration on the skirt was in a ribbon pattern that extended down the front of the puppet body.

Chinese Shadow Puppet before it was sewn to the matboard. Arm positions, hand, body, head and leg positions could have been placed to give this finished product a totally different look. The hands are especially full of expression. I understand the owners of this art puppet actually purchased it in China. I have never seen anything like this before.

I hope you have enjoyed looking at the different stages of this project.

I realize that too many people do not know what goes into custom framing or what questions to ask when considering making choices to preserve art.
